Wheatley, sold into slavery as a child, is noted as the first published African-American poet. Her owners, the Wheatleys, emancipated her after her first collection of poems was published. Her birth name is not known to be recorded, and her given name was a composite of the transport ship’s name (Phillis) and her owners’ surname.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Conversations with Jane - How does fiction mirror real life?</image:title>
      <image:caption>We tend to think of novels as escapism, traveling into different worlds to put on the life of another person or other people. But in most fiction, writers are careful to make the situations believable and relatable. They want readers to return to their books, therefore they don’t write something so far-fetched that the reader throws the book across the room. Instead, readers have in their hands something that may transport them, most likely because they can put themselves in the character’s place, or they know situations like the one they are reading.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e825b5a06140e04dffe45e0/1594769423870-0HOXZ6GA1R85BMQ76PK9/0.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Conversations with Jane - What do we learn by reading fiction?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Because we’re able to easily slip into this fictional set of circumstances, we increase the ability to also do that in real life. The book is saying, subliminally: here are a fictional set of struggles and obstacles that may give insight into real struggles and obstacles. Essentially, the fictional character is a stand in for a real person, and if we can have empathy with the fiction, we will have empathy for the real person. If we can bring empathy into our daily lives and apply it to the people we come in contact with, we’re better for it. Also, anything that draws you in and takes you on a ride of emotion of all kinds has the ability to remind you what it is to be human.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Conversations with Jane - What are you passionate about that may or may not show up in your writing?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Cooking, food, and culture, exploring my own roots through cooking. Travel, solo travel in particular, things that take me out of my comfort zone and nudge me to meet and interact with people on their turf and not my own. Photography, using photography as a medium to improve my attention to detail and to pay attention in general, something I think really influences and informs my writing. Visual art appreciation, learning about different methods artists use, and of course, the people behind the work. I am also passionate about politics, the real nuts and bolts of campaigning, not the noise surrounding it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>In the Aftermath - You have no idea what happens in the aftermath.</image:title>
      <image:caption>When David Herron—overwhelmed and despairing, his family’s business and finances in ruin due to the bursting lending bubble of 2008—takes his own life one chilly spring morning, he has no idea the ripple effect his decision will set into motion. Two years later, his widow, Jules, is now an employee of the bakery she and David used to own—and still full of bitterness over David’s lies, perceived cowardice, and ultimate abandonment of her and their now-teenage daughter, Rennie. Rennie, meanwhile, struggles socially at school, resents her work-obsessed mother, and is convinced she’s to blame for her father’s death. When Denise, the former police detective who worked (and, due to her own personal struggles at the time, mishandled) David’s case, catches sight of Rennie at her sons’ school, she’s struck by the girl’s halo of sadness—and becomes obsessed with attempting to right the wrongs she believes she perpetrated two years ago. And as all this unfolds in Boston, Daniel, the guilt-ridden young man who, in his old life as a banker, helped create the circumstances that led to David’s suicide, continues to punish himself for his sins by living half a life, working odd jobs and bouncing from one US city to another, never staying long enough to make friends or build something lasting. Ultimately, each of these very different people—all of them tied together by one tragic event—must learn in their own way how to say good-bye to the past and move into a brighter future.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Mosaic Artist - The Mosaic Artist</image:title>
      <image:caption>The story of THE MOSAIC ARTIST (Self-published, 2011) took shape after Jane's stint as weekend baker at the Quebrada Bakery in Arlington, MA. Over the morning's scones, muffins, and bread, Jane had many lively conversations with the bakery's cake decorator, a talented and accomplished mosaicist, and soon mosaic art found its outlet in one of the novel's main characters.</image:caption>
